Hello all,

I'm looking for a club round the Leamington Spa/Warwick area over the
summer as I'll be working down at National Grid. The time period is
July/August. I've got 7 years sculling experience, and am very
compitent, so not I'm not going to need to take up anyone's time. I
also have some rowing experience from this year at uni. I would also
like somewhere that won't charge me a full year membership if
possible, as I'm only going to be around for 2 months.

Somewhere with a good atmosphere, community, and not too paranoid
would be good, I've found Warwick rowing club so far, but was just
wondering if there were any others. I'd be looking to get out on the
water most evenings if possible too. Sculling, or similar, but don't
mind some crew stuff. I don't mind travelling by train or bike for up
to 40 minutes if it means I can get somewhere I like. I might also try
and get some racing done.

Warwick Boat Club is only 5 mins walk from National Grid House. I
take it you are down over the summer on the sponsored student scheme?

I work there so look me up when you are down.

Alternatively stratford is 20mins drive. There are 2 boat clubs
there, Stratford and Shakespeare.

yeah I'm down on the power academy scheme, out of the 3 you metioned
which would you recommend, or would I be better to go down and have a
look around before I decide. I noticed there was also Evesham but is
around 25 miles away which would mean an hours bike ride each way, I
don't think that I'll be able to get a car, so it's going to have to
be public transport or cycle

Hi Dan,

My name is James Lee and I am from Warwick Boat Club. We run a
"Student membership" which is usually for students who are returning
to the area from university for the summer and wish to carry on
rowing. I co-ordinate this membership for the club so will email you
some details.

I can assure you that Warwick has a fantastic atmosphere and you would
be made extremely welcome. As Phil has already mentioned, it is
literally only round the corner from you.

That is very true! I can take you down and show you around at Warwick
when you start.

I also used to work at National Grid as a consultant - based Solihull
& Warwick

I rowed at Warwick which has great facilities, but the river is awful.
Birmingham on the reservior was worth the extra drive.

Whilst it's nice to get the plug the water starts disappearing fast from the
reservoir in late August, but many days like today, who knows.... It depends
what you're looking for - Evesham has the most water but is it worth it if
you spend 1 hour each night getting there? I'd agree that Warwick is a
firendly club.

It's amazing how a request like this gets the lurkers out :)

what's wrong with the river at warwick? too short, too narrow, too
bendy? wrong type of water even?

Lurker - yes absolutely. But this is a very specific request. The
only other topical questions on this group have already been answered:

Should boats be buoyant? - Answer yes.
Are the ARA evil and incompetent? - Answer not really either.
How do you win races? - Answer train hard.
Who makes the best boats? - Answer yellow is the fastest colour.

The river at Warwick is very very bendy and very short and very
narrow, but the water itself tastes wonderful. (I forgot to mention
the sea scouts who cover what water there is with canoes)

Aaahhhhh, and you forgot the 'very, very weedy', (in the summer at
least) bit too.
I used to row there too (yes, yes, ANOTHER lurker....), but if the
bends, weeds and general lack of water get you down, you can always
make use of the other club facilities - 8+ tennis courts, a couple of
squash courts, the bowling green, or if you're REALLY struggling, you
could try bridge......

....or the bar, and don't forget, the river is very very flat. Waves
over 3 inches (rare) and it is considered virtually un-rowable.

Aaaah yes - the bar, a FINE establishment! Though I hope by now they
have one or two more rowing photos up on the walls!

Sadly the only rowing photos in the bar remain those of the tennis and
squash sections annual race, but there is an increasing selction of
photos elsewhere of valiant crews being thrashed at Henley.

I rowed at Warwick which has great facilities, but the river is awful.
Birmingham on the reservior was worth the extra drive.
I decided exactly the opposite!

When I was living in Stirchley area of Brum in 1997/8 I had a look at
Birmingham RC before deciding that there was more on offer for me at
Warwick (at the time there were more opportunities for coxing women's
crews at Warwick, which was what I was after). I wasn't running a
car, but I felt it was still worth a bus ride into town and a train
journey from Moor Street to Warwick. Later I moved to Leamington,
partly to be closer to the Boat Club!

I had a very enjoyable season there. The Avon at Warwick is indeed
narrow and bendy, but you can still get useful training done if you're
smart about it.

Hi Dan.

If you're living/working in the leamington spa area then come over to
Stratford-upon-Avon BC. We're currently taking in a lot of student/
summer rowers and scullers and would love to have another join the
men's squad.
If you're looking to scull or row then we can accommodate what you
want to do. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch with
me or have a look at www.stratford-rowing.co.uk
